Snippet of the Day

Snippet of the Day

As soon as Sara opened the door, Misty began weaving herself through Jake’s legs.
“Looks like you’ve made a new friend.” She laughed, taking the brown bag out of his hands, the salty smell of soy sauce filling her nose.
Jake bent down and scooped Misty up, resting her on top of his shoulder.
“You like me, girl?” Jake stroked Misty’s fur. “What do you think about our lady of the house? Huh? Think I can woo her?” Jake reached over, stroking Sara’s cheek. “How’s everything?” He stepped closer to her, lightly brushing his rosy lips over hers, smelling clean and new. Her bones liquefied in his presence.
“Good, glad the week is over,” she said as she set the bag on the counter.
“Rough week, huh?” Jake balanced Misty on his shoulder while trying to remove his leather jacket.
“It’s been very busy.” Sara opened the hutch and removed two plates and set the table. “What would you like to drink? I have some beer in the fridge.”
“Perfect.” Jake straddled the kitchen chair and sat down. “I hope I covered all the basics with dinner?”
“This smells fantastic.” Sara placed steamy heaps of beef and broccoli onto their plates, giving them each an eggroll on the side. She gave Jake his beer and filled a glass of water for herself. Jake set Misty down on the floor then took a long pull on his beer while  eyeing her from across the table. The forest-green shirt he had on made everything about him shine with brilliance, his skin, his eyes.
“After we eat, would you like to go for a walk? Some people have their Christmas lights up.”
“Sure. Is it cold out?” Sara wiped her mouth.
“Nah, these temperatures are a picnic, are you kidding?” He grinned.
“A picnic, huh?” She smiled at him, her body twitching at the sight of him, the sound of his velvety voice. She was physically reacting to his presence, and he was still fully clothed. Every encounter with Jake seemed to bump her bodily reactions up another notch.
“Yeah, wait till January.” He raised his brows at her mysteriously.
“What’s in January?” Sara asked, surprised that he was thinking that far ahead. She was still struggling with the question of whether they were going to exchange Christmas gifts.
“I’m not telling. If I do...then it won’t be a surprise.” He crunched into his eggroll. “All I’ll say is that I’d like us to go night skiing. Of course, we need a little snow. But the rest is a mystery.” His eyes glinted in amusement.
